This new study was published just this month in the journal JAMA Network Open. It suggests that a sedentary lifestyle should be treated almost as a disease. Their prescription is exercise.
The important thing to note about this study is that the data taken was not subjective. The researchers were actually testing the individuals on a treadmill, collecting the data and then objectively measuring it. Many fitness studies rely on participants reporting their activities which is not a very accurate way of collecting data.
Also impressive is the 122,007 patients studied. The participants underwent exercise treadmill testing at Cleveland Clinic between January 1, 1991 and December 31, 2014.Researchers were trying to measure all-cause mortality relating to the benefits of exercise and fitness.
“Being unfit on a treadmill or in an exercise stress test has a worse prognosis, as far as death, than being hypertensive, being diabetic or being a current smoker,” Dr. Wael Jaber,a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic and senior author of the study, told CNN. “We’ve never seen something as pronounced as this and as objective as this.”
If you don’t currently exercise, start walking. Gradually you can add strength training or other forms of exercise. But start. Now. No more tomorrow’s. Today.
