Breaking Up With Sugar Without Losing Your Mind (Part 1)

It’s not me…it’s YOU. I love you, SUGAR but I know you are no good for me. We need to go our separate ways. But it’s just so hard to walk away. Here are some steps you can take to break up with sugar without losing your mind.

I am not going to go into all of the reasons why you should break up with sugar.

I am going to assume that you know that sugar

Be aware that sugar withdrawal is real. You may experience symptoms that feel almost flu-like. Body aches, head aches, fatigue, mental fuzziness, crankiness, depression and cravings. It does go away. It might be easier to go slow rather than quit cold turkey. I find that this is less painful and most people are able to sustain this and turn it into a lasting break up.

Step 1: Identify the Culprit

Identify foods and beverages in your diet that have the highest sugar content. Read labels. Look at the grams of sugar per serving but also at the ingredients. Sugar has many names. Here is a list of 60 Names for Sugar that you may see in the ingredients list on food labels.
Examples:

  • Straight up sugar in your coffee
  • Breakfast cereal
  • Flavored Yogurt
  • Bread
  • Salad dressings, Ketchup, and sauces (aka bbq and pasta sauce)
  • Soda
  • juice
  • Ice cream or frozen yogurt
  • Canned fruit
  • fat free “diet” foods
  • candy
  • granola bars
  • dried fruit

Step 2: Pick one of the above and Eliminate or Reduce and Replace that item.
A big struggle I hear is treats at the office. You are stressed or tired or bored and there is your old friend the candy bowl to give you that sweet taste of happiness.
Ideally you would avoid treats altogether when you are bored or tired or stressed and take a walk or maybe take a 2 minute Facebook break or watch a funny cat video on YouTube. But let’s baby step it.

Arm yourself with some healthier alternatives. Remember that these are still treats. This is not a green light to go whole hog and eat an entire bag or batch.
Of course I suggest a piece of fruit instead. Or even better veggies/protein/healthy fat. Check out these Packable Healthy Snacks
