If you don’t like Eating Chemicals and Bugs check out Frugal Fruit and Veggie Washes

diy washI encourage you to support your local farmers but regardless of where you purchase your produce, it is important to know that washing them off with water doesn’t wash away all of the chemicals and pesticides left on the skin. Mix together a few things you likely already have in your kitchen for an effective and frugal fruit and veggie wash.

Create a Spray:

  • #1
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 cup water
    1. Put all ingredients into a Spray Bottle. You might want to do it over a sink because it will foam up a little.
    2. Shake gently to mix.
    3. Spray on veggies or fruit allow to sit for about 2-5 minutes.
    4. Rinse under cold water.
    5. #2 You could also try…
    6. 2 cups of cold tap water, 1/4 cup of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Mix these ingredients well together and pour into a spray bottle. Squirt your produce 2-3 times, let it rest for two minutes, and then rinse off with more tap water before consuming.

      Create a Soak:

  • #1
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons salt
    1. Fill a clean sink or a large bowl with cold water.
    2. Add in vinegar and salt, then swish around with hands (you can also do this in a large bowl).
    3. Place the fruit and/or veggies in and allow to sit for 25-30 minutes.  Rinse well and this will not effect the flavor at all, the vinegar cleans and the salt draws out any little bugs and dirt.
    1. Live Well.
