I wish I was kidding

I wish I was kidding

I have been wanting to purge the utter disgust I feel regarding this topic but I had to take a little time to settle the rage so I could form sentences without expletives. I am sure by now you’ve heard of the K-E diet aka the feeding tube diet. If not let me enlighten you. Dr. Oliver R. Di Pietro, the creator of this “crash” diet claims he can help you lose as much as 20 pounds in 10 days by putting you on a feeding tube. Before I go off on a tangent, let me explain that you will lose weight initially on any diet where you are restricting calories. You will not lose fat, you will lose water weight. This is pure science and not simply my opinion. This diet seems to appeal to brides who are desperate to lose weight right before their big day.

Let me point out the following: 1) Unless someone ties your hands behind your back or wires your jaw shut, what is preventing you from actually eating while on the tube? 2) Severely restricting calories is not only unsafe and can have long-term negative effects on your metabolism, it is just plain crazy. A bride getting the appropriate calorie intake is stressed and a little crazy right before their wedding. I cannot imagine the bridezillas this will create. 3) You have to walk around with a feeding tube in your nose that runs to your stomach and carry a bagged mixture of protein, fat and water all of the time for 10 days. 4) Most engagements last 6 months to a year or more, plenty of time to lose 20 pounds by developing better eating habits.

According to worldhunger.org it is estimated that 925 billion people in the world are hungry and malnourished. I say to the tube dieters:How disgusting is it that you have access to an abundance of food so great that you cannot find the will within yourself to find a little control and must resort to putting a tube up your nose to stop yourself from devouring it? What an incredible F you to those billions of people who have little or no food, flaunting the fact that you cannot possibly resist the temptation of all of the food that is available to you.

Look – I know that self-control is difficult. I work with clients every day trying to find the will power within themselves to overcome poor eating habits. I just have absolutely no respect for this sort of nonsense. Especially when there are billions of people in the world who will go hungry tonight. We take so much for granted. Take a moment to be grateful for what you have. Do yourself a favor and do the work.

Live Well.
