Why are we as a nation obese? It isn’t a mystery in need of solving. Yet time and money continues to be put into studies on discovering new answers to this question. According to a new study, the culprit is snacking and not portion size that is causing people to over eat. Really? Let me point out that one of the limitations of the study is that the results are based on the subjects recalling what they ate the previous 24 hours as well as their description of portion sizes which we all know may not be accurate.
While I understand their point that advertisements and snacks being available everywhere you look may encourage you to snack more often, I am sorry to disagree with the idea that it is frequency rather than quantity that is causing an obesity epidemic.
There are so many theories out there but I stick to the facts. If you are aware of portion sizes and you stay within an appropriate calorie range, you will maintain a healthy weight or even lose weight. One issue is that not all calories are alike. Some will fill you up and some won’t. So if you are eating empty calorie foods, you will probably snack more because you cannot get full.
As always, eat healthy, filling snacks throughout the day like fruit, veggies, whole grains and lean proteins. Know how much you are eating by reading labels and get off your bum!!
