Don’t make me come over there…

There are a LOT of diet trends out there and it is hard to keep it all straight. Here are  2 that make me want to just

SCREAM!

#1 HCG DIET

The gist: A combination of eating only 500 calories per day while giving oneself daily injections of hCG. hCG is a hormone produced during pregnancy (when you pee on that little stick, the presence of this hormone is what makes that little plus sign that changes your life forever).  It nourishes the egg after it is fertilized. It is supposed to trick your body into thinking you are pregnant and burn off fat in your stomach, upper arms and thighs. Hmmm. BTW hCG is what got Manny Ramirez suspended in 2009 for 50 games.  There are cardiovascular risks. I do not recommend this.

**I never show my stomach to anyone so this is how peeved I am. I just want to remind you that with picture #1 I was eating fruit, whole grains and essential fats along with my protein. I am only preaching what I know works. **

This is a picture of my stomach at about 23 weeks or 5 months. This is what hCG is supposed to do. Ok, so I am actually pregnant but come on; don’t screw with nature 🙂

 

 

#2 DUKAN DIET

The gist: This diet has been around for a long time but it has gained popularity because Kate Middleton is supposedly on it to lose weight for her big royal wedding. (btw- am I the only one who just doesn’t care) It is basically a french version of the Atkins diet – the Dukan diet came first just to be clear on who is copying who. No carbs, sugar, fats, etc. One day every week entirely of just protein  (that’s right not even a vegetable is allowed on that day). It is very strict. Of course you will lose weight on this diet. You are cutting calories. The reason most people will gain the weight back is because when they are allowed to reintroduce fruits and carbs into their diet, they binge because they have gone without for so long. So they are now eating too many calories.

Why oh why would you do such a silly thing? If you want to lose weight, as I’ve said before, you need to know how many calories you need to consume, based on your daily activity level, age, height and weight and make sure you are creating a calorie deficit. Why would you cut out fruit, whole grains and essential fats when you just need to learn a little self control. Why are you willing to listen to a French man telling you to cut out everything you love to eat but can’t listen to a pregnant woman who is concerned for your well being as well as your quality of life tells you to just cut back?
